Joe here, welcome. I'm here to talk about topics concerning aging. You may be wondering why you should deal with the management of aging issues. This is the reason why we are here for you.
Listening Is What We Do.
No matter what issues you may face, whether they relate to money, health care, or real estate, we will listen to them all. We are able to assist you because we have a team of professionals with more than 40 years of combined experience who can guide you through any issues you may be having. Professionalism is the first step, but you also need a certain amount of empathy because if we can’t relate to what you’re experiencing, there’s a problem. After all, then it’s just it’s a black-and-white issue. This is what you ought to do. It boils down to figures.
The phrase “Well, the book says this, but do you know something?” becomes convenient. Not all of the information in the book is accurate, and not all circumstances are the same. Not usually does one plus one equal two. Professionals need to have a particular level of experience and care only a little about you in order to assist you in solving your problems. Occasionally, they ask, “What should I do?”
What are my choices if I require this kind of assistance? Do I meet the requirements for this help? As an illustration, Kai came in today and mentioned how they believed they received 100 days of therapy but had to start paying after 60. So you might only sometimes be aware of your possibilities.
People require assistance with various issues and a group that can offer guidance and, if necessary, point them in the correct way. They require assistance. A company like Aging Issues Management must have connections with care managers, assisted living facilities, home care providers, and one on one mobility to arrange for the installation of a chair lift. We discussed how challenging it was to transport a client from the first floor to their apartment on the second floor. The home had two families.
Therefore, we needed to discuss a chairlift, but they objected, saying it would be too costly and permanent. Okay, so it’s not. However, if you need one, you can rent a shared lift. Therefore, you might rent a chair lift as a temporary solution if the situation is temporary. The other benefit is that you can recover some of your chair lift investment and that you can even purchase used chairlifts with warranties and service agreements. There are, therefore, numerous choices.
To determine how to install a chair lift, we collaborate with care managers, assisted living communities, home care agencies, and one-on-one mobility services. For example, we were just discussing how challenging it was to transport a client from the first floor to their second-story apartment. A home for two families existed there.
We, therefore, needed to discuss a chairlift, but they objected, saying that it would be too expensive and remain in place forever. Not at all, no. A shared lift is available for rent when necessary. You can rent a chair lift if it’s only for a brief period. The chair lift can help you regain some of your investment and purchase used chairlifts with warranties and service agreements. There are numerous options.
There are also options for elevators if the problem will last for a long time and the money is there. And sometimes you need to find out what else, what other ways there are to get money to make these home improvements. If you want to stay at home, you need financial experience to help you figure out how to do that.
You Need Someone To Help You Plan The Next Steps In Your Life.
Let’s talk about some of the most common ones.
- Well, the first thing we talk about is always, “Where will I live?” Should I stay here or move? Sometimes it has to do with money. Sometimes it has to do with the way people live. This is what you should look at and figure out.
You need someone to help you figure out what to do by asking you the right questions. Because it didn’t happen in one meeting, I didn’t just decide to move when I woke up. That doesn’t happen. You need to know where you’re going.
- You need to know whether your budget or finances will allow you to move to where you want to move. So, let’s start with a plan. First, we talk in-depth about where you want to live. What would be the best place for you to live? What would be in it?
- Let’s make a list of ten things you’d like to have in your next place to live. So, I’d like to meet near a park. I want to be close to stores. I want there to be only one story. I want everything to be exactly the same.
- I want the apartment to be easy to get into. I want parking available. I’d like a garage. I want my kitchen to be new. I want a patio.
- I want a patio in the backyard. You’re going to put all kinds of things on that list we want at about the same time. We can only find places with 8 or 9 of the 10 items on your list, or 20 things in total. I’ve seen lists that go on for pages, and sometimes we stop and ask, “Okay, what’s a game changer?”
- What would you not be able to live without?
- Sometimes it’s just space. You may need to be able to go outside. That’s a start. This could also be a change. And by “transition,” I mean that you can sometimes do things in stages during your retirement.
- So maybe a place where you can live on your own or have a certain amount of independence becomes available. The next step in my life is when I need help or supervision. Someone must be around for someone to notice if I fall. Everyone has a different list. Situations are different for everyone.
As I often say, the problems you face when choosing a place to live are not unique, but how you solve them will always be unique to you. So, we need someone you trust who can act as a fiduciary for you. This is a person you can count on to help guide you. In addition, this person may help you figure out how to make some choices.
So, let’s talk about that adviser or fiduciary. They must be able to be checked out.
How do you check out? If you’re dealing with a financial professional, you can go to a website called “broker check” to learn a little about the person, like how long they’ve been in business, who they’ve worked with, if there have been any complaints, etc. This is a common thing to do. But on the other hand, you might need a referral every time you see something on social media or anywhere else. Looking for an ABC person, a plumber, an electrician, or, I’ll say this, a financial advisor is something I rarely see. And if they do, it seems like 50 people jump in.
But at the same time, have you talked to friends, family, and relatives about how you handled this situation? And they may have recommended going to an ABC person. I am blessed that I’ve been doing this for nearly 40 years. 20 of those 40 have been only dealing with aging issues, senior citizens, and the issues they face, whether it be long-term care, whether it be figuring out Medicare, and subsequently possibly figuring out Medicaid, providing for survivors.
I’m an expert on a set of stages in retirement, and people have sent friends, family, and relatives to me.
“They have said to talk to Joe,” people say that all the time. Having that is fantastic. However, I enjoy teaching people because I have so much experience in this field. I like to identify these issues and let others know they’re not alone by helping them overcome them—everyone frets when there is an issue or catastrophe.
-My husband won’t be able to leave the hospital; oh my god. He won’t be able to return home. What shall I do? Some quick responses, such as “Oh, we can go to assisted living or a rehab center” or “We can do a few things,” are available. But regrettably, you always question, “Do I have enough money?”
-Will taking care of my husband require all of my financial resources? Sadly, this is what frequently occurs; therefore, I’m using my spouse as an example. Before the wife, the husband needs to be looked after.
Of course, it could turn out differently. But whether it’s for my partner, mother, or father, every family needs a plan.
Sometimes the strategy is to take care of them with every penny or dime their parents have. Making a plan to see whether they can receive assistance from the government is sometimes necessary. Can they qualify for Medicaid traditionally? Sometimes the response is that, with advance planning, they may soon qualify. Even if things don’t go as planned, they can still be considered under the law if they work hard and plan ahead.
As a result, they might eventually qualify for Medicaid after paying for their care and saving a specific amount of money. They are “poor” when eligible for Medicaid, and the government should assist them. As a result, it is clear that there are numerous issues. I occasionally find it challenging to communicate with my in-laws. How can we assist?
Assisted living is a fantastic choice for people who can’t live alone. Another distinctive quality of assisted living is the social environment it fosters. And after doing this for a while, as I just mentioned, the person who receives social stimulation sees and interacts with other people and lives longer.
Why are we here?
We are all human. We’re not designed to live by ourselves. We’re not designed to live alone. We have a social nature.
You tend to get a little cranky. At times, you may want to discuss politics. You may occasionally discuss sports. Sometimes, you could feel the need to consult someone else. However, you have obviously noticed that we wish to speak.
Although in the society we currently live in, everyone seems to be texting. But I’m told that’s talking. The hands are moving swiftly, but I can’t hear the voices. As you might have guessed, I’m speaking to my daughter. I am conversing with everyone.
I’m used to the previous state of affairs. When I interview someone, I converse with them. We occasionally maintain tabs on it. We sometimes only take notes. I have many pets.
I adore legal avenues. Take a lot of notes, figure it out, fill in the gaps with my thoughts, and then go back to the person and say, “This is kind of what I heard.” I’m calling facts and presumptions that are crucial because I called a document.
Actual facts are as distinct as numbers in black and white.
- When I retire, I will receive X dollars every month.
- I spend Y dollars in total.
These details might be significant. Essential details. It’s possible that I reside here, right? I want to stay in this place.
Then there are the things people assume. What do you want? I would have asked you these questions right away. What’s your ideal place to live? What do you plan to do when you get old? You want to go somewhere.
You’d like to do some things. You want to leave your kids money. You don’t want to give your kids money. These are what people think.
When we know each other and are on the same page, we can make suggestions. We can figure out what to do. We’re on the same page when we’re talking about the same thing and agree on the most critical facts and assumptions. Now, you need to get in touch with my team and me, and we need to advise you. Even if you disagree with the suggestions, you’ll still have them, and that’s what we get paid to do.
The last step is putting the plan into action. So, there are the best ways to do things. First, find out the facts. The second thing is a look at or review of something. The third thing is to ask for advice.
The fourth thing is getting things done. They are then keeping an eye on it. If a financial advisor does that, they are being honest and doing the right thing. It’s a bit like a circle, but at the same time, these steps are always taken. If you want advice from someone you can trust, you should talk to Aging Issues Management.
So, let’s start with the most important facts and assumptions and then move on to the recommendations. The last part is putting the plan into action. And there are many different ways to carry out the plan. So, this is Joe again. Please call me at 914-468-0186 or email me at joe@AgingIssuesMgnt.com if you have any questions.
